When it comes to cosmetology and beauty, the fads are always changing and updating. As we are headed into the new year, many of the popular styles we have grown to love, or maybe can’t wait to see go, are staying in 2023. Hair, makeup, skincare, nails – you name it, it’s changing. Don’t panic! If 2023 was your best-looking year yet! No one is going to judge you if you continue doing things the way you always have!
NAILS
No more squoval! Sorry friends, the ever-so-popular square nails with rounded corners are a thing of the past. It is all about almond now! Pointy pointy pointy! But if you’re not into the dagger-esque look, or for your own and children’s safety may opt for something less dangerous, then give oval and coffin a try! They are both very in and are still a close runner-up to almond.
The fashion and trends from the 70s, 80s, and 90s have been increasing steadily. While the thick wide baggy pants might stick around a bit longer, this swirly pattern that screams groovy has got to go! If one-color nails aren’t your jam, don’t fret! While swirlies aren’t coming with us this year, monochrome, duo-chrome, metallic, and half-and-half nails are along for the ride.
HAIR
It’s no secret many are stressing this holiday and the new year brings about its own worries for people. One thing we’re not worrying about is our hair! Short bobs, blunt cuts, and low-maintenance trims are your best friend as you take on this year. We don’t have time for elaborate color schemes that need upkeep, strategic cuts that require effort daily, or anything we can’t style on the go, between kids, games, work, social life, personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning, and adulting. There leaves little room in our schedules for lengthy hairdos.
This goes for color, too! Elaborate highlights, a lot of different colors, hours at the salon, and a touch-up appointment every 4-6 weeks. That is not in the cards this year. 2024 is all about saving ourselves time and energy. Maybe your relaxation and alone time is your multi-hour salon sesh, and if so, good for you, and keep doing it!
MAKEUP
Remember when all we wanted was matte matte matte? Matte lip, matte foundation, matte powder – well, leave it be in 2023 because we’re going dewy and natural. Less powder, less product, just less. A dewy tinted bb cream, a light translucent powder, and a finishing mist might be all you need! Keep it simple, fresh, and you! Just remember no one is going to look at you and say “I wish her face was matte like last year.”
If the idea of ditching some valuable steps in your makeup routine gives you a little anxiety but you’re still up for trying the dewy look, try switching powder blush to liquid blush or powder contour to liquid contour. While the same look can be achieved, using the liquid versions of the product can help stay away from looking too powdery or dry.
