Are you passionate about skincare and beauty? Do you love helping others feel confident in their own skin? If so, becoming a licensed esthetician in Texas might be the perfect career path for you.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about becoming an esthetician in Texas, from education and training to licensing and career opportunities.

What Does an Esthetician Do?

An esthetician is a skincare specialist trained to provide treatments that improve the health and appearance of the skin. As an esthetician, you can offer a variety of services, including:

  • Facials and skincare treatments
  • Chemical peels
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Waxing and hair removal
  • Eyelash and eyebrow treatments
  • Makeup application
  • Advanced skin treatments such as LED therapy and hydrafacials

Unlike dermatologists, estheticians do not diagnose or treat medical skin conditions. However, they play a crucial role in helping clients achieve and maintain healthy skin through specialized treatments and skincare education.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

Before enrolling in an esthetician training program in Texas, you’ll need to meet a few basic eligibility requirements. At DuVall’s School of Cosmetology, you can begin your training as early as 16 years old and be eligible to take the state licensing exam as soon as you turn 17. You will also need your high school diploma or GED.

If you meet these qualifications, you’re ready to take the next step toward enrollment!

Step 2: Enroll in an Approved Esthetics Program

To become a licensed esthetician in Texas, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requires you to complete 750 hours of training in a state-approved esthetics program at a licensed beauty school. DuVall’s School of Cosmetology has proudly offered TDLR-approved esthetics training since 2006, providing students with the education they need to launch their careers.

What You’ll Learn in DuVall’s Esthetics Program

During your esthetics training, you will receive practical training and technical instruction covering all aspects of esthetics, including:

  • Skin Analysis: Understanding skin types, conditions, and disorders
  • Facials: Techniques for deep cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration
  • Hair Removal: Waxing, threading, and other hair removal methods
  • Exfoliation: Techniques such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion
  • Make-Up Application: Enhancing facial features with professional techniques
  • Salon Management: Business skills, client consultation, and spa operations
  • State Board Training: Preparing for Texas licensing exams

A significant portion of training involves real-life experience with clients, ensuring you’re prepared for the industry.

Partnered with the Best Skincare Brands

DuVall’s School of Cosmetology provides hands-on training in facial treatments, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels using both Dermalogica and Rhonda Allison skincare products and serums. By working with real clients and addressing various skin concerns, this practical experience with top-tier brands fully prepares you for a career in the skincare industry.

Upon completing the 750-hour course, you’ll be eligible to test for the Texas State License and will also hold certifications in microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

Step 3: Pass the Texas Esthetician Licensing Exams

After completing your esthetician training, the next step is passing the required TDLR licensing exams. The Texas esthetician exam consists of two parts:

1. Written Exam

This portion of the exam tests your knowledge of skincare, sanitation, and state regulations. You’ll need to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • Skin anatomy and disorders
  • Infection control
  • State laws and regulations
  • Product chemistry

2. Practical Exam

The practical exam assesses your ability to perform esthetician services safely and effectively. You will be required to demonstrate:

  • Proper sanitation procedures
  • Facial treatments
  • Hair removal techniques
  • Makeup application
  • Client safety protocols

How to Schedule Your Exam

DuVall’s School of Cosmetology covers the exam fee for your first attempt at both the written and practical tests and assists in scheduling exams. If you fail or miss your scheduled exam, any subsequent test fees will be your responsibility.

To take the Texas esthetician exam, you must apply through PSI Exams, the official testing provider for TDLR. You’ll need to:

  • Schedule your test date
  • Bring the required identification and supplies on exam day

Our students consistently achieve strong licensing exam results, thanks to classroom exercises that simulate the actual test experience. Our goal is to help you feel confident and prepared.

Step 4: Apply for Your Texas Esthetician License

Once you pass both the written and practical exams, your Texas esthetician license is automatically processed. Here’s how it works:

  • After passing the written exam, you’ll receive an email with your results. At the bottom of that email, you’ll find a link to pay the $50 licensure fee.
  • Once you pass the practical exam, your license will be processed and mailed to you—no additional application is required.

Since all necessary information is collected when you register for the written exam, the process is very easy to use, and DuVall’s is available to help you if needed.

Step 5: Explore Career Opportunities

Once you have your esthetician license, you can pursue various career paths, including:

  • Skin Care Specialist
  • Medical Esthetician

  • Waxing Technician
  • Makeup Technician
  • Eyelash Technician
